Sequoia sempervirens

The Sequoia sempervirens is a very special kind of tree. It is also called the coast redwood or California redwood. These trees are some of the tallest trees in the world!

Coast redwoods grow along the coast of California and a little bit in Oregon. They love places with lots of rain and fog. These trees can grow very, very tall—some even reach over 100 meters, which is about as tall as a 30-story building!

These trees stay green all year long. Their leaves are small and flat. The bark is thick and red-brown, which helps protect the tree. Coast redwoods can live for more than 1,000 years!

Many people love these trees, and many are protected in special parks. One famous tall tree is called Hyperion. It is the tallest known living coast redwood. People visit these parks to see how amazing and big these trees are.

Coast redwoods are very important. Their wood is strong and beautiful. Long ago, people used these trees for building. Today, we make sure to protect many of these trees so they can keep growing and staying healthy for many more years.
