Shrubs

Shrubs are small, woody plants that stay above the ground all year. Unlike trees, shrubs are usually shorter and have many stems instead of one big trunk. They can be found all around the world, growing in many different places.

Some shrubs lose their leaves in winter, while others keep their leaves all year. People love shrubs for their beautiful flowers, like rhododendrons, or for their special leaves. In gardens, areas filled with shrubs are called shrubberies or shrub gardens.

Shrubs can be very useful. Some give us small berries to eat, and others, like lavender and rose, have lovely scents. Some shrubs even help make drinks like tea and coffee. They can also grow in tough places where trees cannot, like cold or high mountain areas.

Shrublands are places where shrubs grow wild. There are many types of shrublands, such as fynbos, maquis, and moorland. These areas are important for many animals and plants.
