Who Was Solon?
Solon was an important leader and thinker from ancient Athens. He lived around 630 to 560 BC, a very long time ago. Solon helped make rules that let people have a say in how the city was run. This was an early step toward what we call democracy today.
Solon’s Helpful Changes
Solon made many changes to help people in Athens. He created new laws so everyone could see them. He wanted to help people who were struggling with debts. This change was called the seisachtheia, meaning "shaking off of burdens." Solon also encouraged people to learn useful skills and invited workers from other places to live in Athens.
Solon’s Travels and Wisdom
After finishing his work, Solon traveled for ten years. He visited Egypt and talked with priests. He also went to Cyprus to help build a new city and later to Sardis, where he met King Croesus. Solon shared wise ideas, teaching that no one could be called truly happy until the end of their life.
Why We Remember Solon
Even though we don’t have all of his writings today, Solon is remembered as a wise and fair leader. His ideas and laws helped make Athens a fairer place. He is honored as one of the Seven Sages of Greece. People studied his work for many years, and his poems talked about fairness and peace.
