South Australia is in the southern part of Australia. It shares borders with Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria. It also has a long coastline along the Great Australian Bight. The capital city is Adelaide, where most people live. Other smaller towns include Mount Gambier.

People have lived in South Australia for about 20,000 years. Early explorers from Europe first saw the coast in 1627. South Australia became a British colony in 1834.
