Welcome to Suriname

Suriname is a small and beautiful country in northern South America. It is the smallest country in South America, with a population of around 612,000 people. The capital city is Paramaribo, where about half the people live.

Suriname is covered in lush rainforest, with over 90% of its land still forested. This makes it one of the most forested countries in the world. The country borders the Atlantic Ocean to the north, French Guiana to the east, Brazil to the south, and Guyana to the west.

The name Suriname might come from an Indigenous peoples group called the Surinen. The ending "-ame" is common in names of rivers and places in the country, meaning "river" or "creek mouth."

Today, Suriname is a diverse nation with people from many different backgrounds. Dutch is the official language, but many people also speak Sranan Tongo, an English-based creole language, and English. The country is known for its cultural variety and natural resources like bauxite, gold, petroleum, and agricultural products.

Suriname has many special days and festivals throughout the year, celebrating its diverse cultures. Some important holidays include New Year's Day, Chinese New Year, Phagwah, Easter, Labour Day, Indian Arrival Day, Ketikoti (Emancipation Day), Indigenous People's Day, Independence Day, and Christmas.

Football is the most popular sport in Suriname, and many talented players have come from the country. Swimmer Anthony Nesty is the only Olympic medalist for Suriname, winning gold in the 100-meter butterfly at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
