The Taurus Mountains
The Taurus Mountains are a big, beautiful group of mountains in southern Turkey. They stretch from Lake Eğirdir in the west all the way to where the Euphrates River and Tigris River begin in the east. These mountains help separate the warm, wet lands near the Mediterranean Sea from the drier areas of the Anatolian Plateau.
These mountains are part of a large chain called the Alpide belt that runs across Eurasia. Because of this, they play an important role in the geography of Turkey and nearby lands. The heights and ranges of the Taurus Mountains shape the weather and influence where people live and travel.
The Taurus Mountains have many tall peaks and beautiful landscapes. One of the highest points is Mt. Demirkazık in the Central Taurus area. There are also special passes, like the Cilician Gates, which have been important paths for travelers and traders for a very long time.
People have lived near these mountains for thousands of years. The Taurus Mountains have forests full of different plants, and at the highest points, you can find alpine meadows with colorful wildflowers. Today, the mountains are also a place for fun activities like hiking, mountain climbing, and even skiing at places like Davras and Saklıkent. One famous spot is the Varda Viaduct, a tall railway bridge built a long time ago by Germans.
