What Are Tears?
Tears are a special clear liquid that comes from our eyes. Every land mammal, including humans, makes tears to keep their eyes healthy and comfortable. Tears come from glands called lacrimal glands that are right near our eyes.
Tears are made of water, salts, and many other helpful things. They help wash away dust or anything that shouldn’t be in our eyes. When we blink, the tears spread across our eyes to keep them wet and smooth.
Why Do We Cry?
Sometimes our eyes make more tears when something irritates them, like smoke or dust. These are called reflex tears, and they help clean the eyes. We also make tears when we feel strong feelings, like sadness or happiness. These are called emotional tears.
When we cry, the tears flow from our eyes and can even go to our nose. That’s why our nose might run when we cry!
Tears Help Us
Tears are very important for our eyes. They protect the eyes and help fight tiny germs. When we feel happy or sad, crying can be a natural way to cope with our feelings.
Even animals like cats and camels have special ways to keep their eyes moist, just like we do. Tears are a wonderful part of how our bodies work to keep us healthy.
