The Blue Marble
The Blue Marble is a very famous picture of our planet, Earth. It was taken a long time ago, on December 7, 1972, by an astronaut named Harrison Schmitt from a special spaceship called Apollo 17. He was traveling toward the bright, glowing Moon when he took this amazing photo.
In the picture, Earth looks like a beautiful blue glass marble floating in space. You can see parts of the Mediterranean Sea, the icy Antarctica, and the sandy Arabian Peninsula. Many people have shared this picture because it shows how special and alone our planet looks in the big universe.
Since this first picture, more photos called “blue marble” images have been made. These are created by putting together many pictures taken by satellites around Earth. They help us see Earth in new ways and remind us to take care of our home planet.
The Blue Marble picture is very important to many people. It helps us remember how wonderful Earth is and why we should protect it.
