What is the Thoracic Cavity?

The thoracic cavity is a special space inside our bodies. It is also called the chest cavity. This space is protected by the rib cage and muscles around it. The thoracic cavity holds very important parts of our body.

What is Inside the Thoracic Cavity?

Inside the thoracic cavity, you will find the heart, the lungs, and big blood vessels like the aorta. There is also the trachea, which helps us breathe, and the esophagus, which helps us swallow. All these parts work together to keep us healthy.

How is the Thoracic Cavity Protected?

The thoracic cavity is safe inside the thoracic wall. This wall includes the rib cage and muscles. It helps keep everything inside safe. There are also special spaces around the lungs and the heart, like the pleural cavities and the pericardial cavity.

The thoracic cavity has two openings: a small one at the top called the thoracic inlet and a larger one at the bottom. In the middle of the cavity is the mediastinum, which holds organs between the lungs.
