UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions League is a special soccer competition for the best teams in Europe. It is organized by the Union of European Football Associations. Every year, top teams from different countries come together to see who can be the best in Europe.

The Champions League started in 1955 and was called the European Cup. Only the best team from each country could join at first. Now, more teams can play, and the competition has many stages, ending with a big final game.

Winning the Champions League is a big deal. It means a team is one of the greatest in European soccer. Spain has the most wins, but teams from England, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and Portugal have also won. Real Madrid holds the record with 15 wins, and the current champions are Paris Saint-Germain, who won their first title in 2025.

History

The first big meeting of champions from two European leagues happened in 1895. Sunderland from England beat Heart of Midlothian from Scotland.

In 1955, the European Champion Clubs' Cup began. The first final was in 1956, where Real Madrid won.

Real Madrid won the first five tournaments. In 1961, Barcelona beat them, but then lost to Benfica. Later, Inter Milan and Celtic also won the cup.

In 1968, Manchester United became the first English team to win. Then, Dutch teams like Ajax and Feyenoord started winning.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, English teams like Liverpool and Nottingham Forest won often.

After that, teams from many countries won, and the tournament was renamed the UEFA Champions League. In recent years, Spanish teams like Real Madrid have won many times.

Anthem

The UEFA Champions League has a special anthem called "Champions League." It was made in 1992. The music comes from a piece by George Frideric Handel from 1727.

The anthem is played before every Champions League match and on TV broadcasts. It has words in English, German, and French. The most exciting part says, "Die Meister! Die Besten! Les Grandes Équipes! The Champions!"

Format

The Champions League has 36 teams. Teams qualify by being league champions or finishing high in their leagues.

The competition has a league phase and a knockout phase. In the league phase, each team plays eight matches. The top teams move to the knockout stage.

The knockout stage starts in February, with matches usually on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The final is played in late May or early June.

Prizes

The winning team gets a special trophy called the European Champion Clubs' Cup. The current version has been used since 1967. The trophy is made of silver and stands about 74 centimeters tall.

Winners also get gold medals, and the runners-up get silver medals.

Awards

Since the 2021–22 season, there are two special awards. The Player of the Season award goes to the best player, and the Young Player of the Season award goes to the best young player. Coaches and journalists choose the winners.
