Wieliczka Salt Mine

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is a very old and special place. It is located in the town of Wieliczka, near Kraków in Poland. People have been taking salt from here for many years, since the 13th century.

This mine is one of the oldest in the whole world. It has over 287 kilometres (178 miles) of tunnels and rooms, going down 327 metres (1,073 feet). Inside, you can see beautiful carvings made from shiny rock salt. There is also an underground lake and old mining tools to see.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is now a Polish Historic Monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many people visit to walk through the old tunnels and enjoy the amazing sights. Famous people like Nicolaus Copernicus and Pope John Paul II have visited this wonderful place.

You can take different tours to explore the mine. The Tourist Route takes about 1.5 hours and includes a special chapel and a sound and light show. There are also other routes to discover more secrets underground.
