Who Was Woodrow Wilson?
Woodrow Wilson was the 28th president of the United States. He served from 1913 to 1921. Wilson was the only Democrat president during a time called the Progressive Era, when Republicans usually held the office.
Early Life and Education
Wilson was born in Staunton, Virginia and grew up in the Southern United States. He studied history and political science and later became president of Princeton University. Before becoming president, he was the governor of New Jersey.
Presidency
In the 1912 election, Wilson won against two famous presidents, William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt. During his time in office, Wilson worked on changes to help the economy and workers. He tried to keep the United States neutral when World War I began but later led the country into the war.
Family and Later Life
Wilson married Ellen Louise Axson, and they had three children: Margaret, Jessie, and Eleanor. After Wilson had a stroke in 1919, his wife and doctor helped take care of him. He did not run for another term. Wilson passed away in 1924.
