The Bright Color Yellow

Yellow is a bright and cheerful color that we see all around us. It is the color of sunshine, lemons, and buttercups. In nature, many things are yellow because of special pigments called carotenoids. These give autumn leaves, corn, canaries, daffodils, lemons, egg yolks, buttercups, and bananas their lovely shade.

Yellow is a very important color in art. Long ago, people used a yellow clay called yellow ochre to paint pictures in caves. One famous painting of a yellow horse is over 17,000 years old and was found in the Lascaux caves in France. In old Egypt, yellow was used to show gold and the skin of gods in tomb paintings.

On screens like TVs and computers, yellow is made by mixing red and green light. In printing, yellow is one of the main colors used to create many other colors. Yellow is also easy to see, which is why it is used for school buses, safety signs, and traffic lights. A yellow traffic light tells us to slow down.

In many places, yellow stands for happiness and kindness. In China and some other Asian countries, yellow is a special color linked to royalty and respect. It is a color that brings warmth and brightness into our lives.
