Who Was Bernhard Riemann?

Bernhard Riemann was a clever German mathematician. He lived from 1826 to 1866. People remember him for his smart ideas that helped change how we think about math and space.

Where He Lived

Riemann was born in a small village called Breselenz near Dannenberg in the old Kingdom of Hanover. Later, he studied at the famous University of Göttingen. He loved math from a very young age.

Big Ideas in Math

Riemann had many wonderful ideas. One was a new way to add up shapes under curves, called the Riemann integral. He also thought about special shapes named Riemann surfaces. These helped other mathematicians solve tricky problems.

In 1859, he made a famous guess called the Riemann Hypothesis. This guess is still a big puzzle today! His work also helped ideas about space, which later supported Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity.

A Life Full of Learning

Riemann grew up in a loving Protestant family. His father was a pastor. Even though he was shy and sometimes sick, he worked very hard. He believed his math work was a way to honor God. Sadly, Riemann passed away in Italy when he was only 39. But his clever ideas keep inspiring new discoveries in math and science today.
