Meet Triceratops
Triceratops was a very special dinosaur that lived a long, long time ago—about 68 to 66 million years ago. It lived on a land called Laramidia, which is now part of western North America. This amazing dinosaur had a big, strong body and walked on four legs.
What Made Triceratops Special?
The name Triceratops means "three-horned face" because it had three big horns! One horn was on its nose, and two big horns were above its eyes. It also had a large, bony shield called a frill on the back of its head. Triceratops was one of the biggest dinosaurs, growing up to about 8–9 metres long—almost as long as a school bus!
Discovery of Triceratops
Scientists first found Triceratops fossils in 1887 near Denver in Colorado. At first, they thought the bones were from an ancient bison, but later they realized they had discovered a new kind of dinosaur. Since then, many Triceratops fossils have been found, showing babies growing into big adults.
Why We Love Triceratops
Triceratops is one of the most famous dinosaurs because of its cool looks—with three horns and a big frill, it’s easy to recognize! It appears in many movies, books, and even on stamps. People all over the world know about Triceratops and think it is one of the most interesting dinosaurs ever found. It even is the official state fossil of South Dakota and the official state dinosaur of Wyoming!
