1860 United States census
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
The 1860 United States census was the eighth time the United States counted how many people lived there. It started on June 1, 1860, and lasted for five months. During this time, people found out that 31,443,321 people lived in the United States. This was in 33 states and 10 organized areas. This number was 35.6 percent more than the people counted in the 1850 census.
The counting happened just as the country was heading toward the American Civil War. Because of this, the person in charge, Joseph C. G. Kennedy, and his team could only make a few reports for the public. Even so, they were able to make maps for Union leaders. These maps showed important information like how many white people and slaves lived in each place, what kind of farming was done, and where roads and railroads were.
This census also showed that Philadelphia became the second-biggest city in America again. It had lost this place to Baltimore in 1820. But in 1854, many smaller areas around Philadelphia were joined together into one big city. Later, in 1890, Chicago took over as the second-biggest city.
Census questions
The 1860 census had two main parts to count people in the United States. The first part, called "Free Inhabitants," collected details about people who were not enslaved. The second part, called "Slave Inhabitants," gathered information about enslaved people.

Common occupations
In 1860, many people in the United States worked as farmers. They made up almost 10% of all jobs. The next most common jobs were farm laborers and general laborers. In places like Essex, Massachusetts, many women worked making shoes, while men often farmed or made shoes.
Only a small part of the population, about 0.2%, were students at the time. This shows that not many people were going to school then.
