The Anne Frank House (Dutch: Anne Frank Huis) is a writer's house and biographical museum for Jewish girl Anne Frank. It is in a building on a canal named the Prinsengracht, close to the Westerkerk, in central Amsterdam.

During World War II, when Germany occupied the Netherlands, Anne Frank hid with her family and others in secret rooms at the back of the building. She did not live through the war, but her diary was published after the war.

The museum opened in 1960. It shows where Anne Frank hid and has exhibits about her life and times. It also has space for shows about persecution and discrimination.

Building history

The Anne Frank House is a historic building in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It was built in 1635 and has had many uses over the years, like a home, a warehouse, and an office.

During World War II, the building became a hiding place for Anne Frank, her family, and four others. They stayed hidden there for two years until they were found. Today, the house is a museum about Anne Frank and her story.

The building has hidden rooms where Anne and the others lived in secret. These rooms are now kept the same to show visitors what life was like for people hiding during the war.

Anne’s diaries, which she wrote while hiding, were later published and are famous around the world. They give us a special look at her life during a very hard time.

Museum history

After Anne Frank's diary was published, many people wanted to see the hidden rooms where she and her family stayed during World War II. In 1955, a company wanted to tear down the building, but many people spoke up and the building was saved.

The Anne Frank Foundation was created in 1957 to buy and fix up the building. They opened it as a museum in 1960. As more people visited, the museum needed changes to welcome everyone. Today, the museum also has online tours so people all over the world can learn about Anne Frank's story. The museum shows many special items, including an award won by an actress for playing a character in a movie about Anne Frank.

Even after some changes in 2017, the museum stayed very popular. That year, it became the third most visited museum in the Netherlands, after the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum. The museum is part of the Museumvereniging, or Museum Association.
