Bloomingdale is a community in Hillsborough County, Florida, in the United States. It is not a city with its own government but a place recognized by the census.

The area uses two ZIP Codes. One is 33511, which has its address listed as Brandon, and the other is 33596, listed as Valrico. These ZIP Codes help mail get to the right places in Bloomingdale.

History

Bloomingdale was settled before 1850 by John Vickers, John Carney, and others. Carney was killed during the Third Seminole War in 1856. The Bloomingdale School opened in 1884 and trained teachers from places as far north as Gainesville and as far south as Miami-Dade County. When the railway came to Brandon in 1890, many business owners moved there, and Bloomingdale's growth slowed. The post office closed in 1910, and the school closed in 1920. By the 1960s, Bloomingdale became a place where people lived and worked in nearby Tampa.

Geography

Bloomingdale is located in east-central Hillsborough County. It is close to several places: Brandon to the north, Valrico to the northeast, FishHawk to the southeast, and Riverview to the southwest. It is about 16 miles southeast of downtown Tampa.

The area of Bloomingdale is 8.4 square miles, with most of it being land and a small part being water. The Alafia River runs along its southern edge, and there are some rapids called Bell Shoals there.

Demographics

Bloomingdale had 22,947 people living there in the 2020 census. The average age was 41.8 years old. About 23.3% of the people were younger than 18, and 16.6% were 65 or older. For every 100 girls and women, there were 96.7 boys and men.

Most people lived in urban areas. There were 8,069 homes, and about 35.9% of them had children under 18 living in them. Many homes were led by married couples, while some were led by single mothers or fathers.

The average income for a family was around $72,282, and men earned more than women on average. Only a small part of the community lived below the poverty line.

Education

Bloomingdale is part of the Hillsborough County Schools system. There is a high school called Bloomingdale High School in the community.
