Central Hungary is a special area in the country of Hungary. It is one of eight regions that help organize the country for counting people and planning. This area is mostly made up of a place called Pest County.

Before 2018, the big city of Budapest, the capital of Hungary, was also part of Central Hungary, but now it is separate. In Hungarian, this area is called Közép-Magyarország.

Central Hungary has areas called subregions. One of these is Pest County. The number of people living there was counted by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office in 2009.

Demography

Central Hungary had 1,325,036 people in 2021. About 17% of them were children aged 0 to 14. Most people, around 65%, were between 15 and 64 years old. About 18% were 65 years and older.

Economy

Central Hungary is the richest and most developed part of the country. In 2017, the unemployment rate was 2.7%. This rate is lower than both the national average and the average for Europe.

Tourism

Central Hungary is part of the Budapest Central Transdanubia Tourist Region.

Budapest has many special places to see. In 1987, several important sites were named a World Heritage Site. These include Buda Castle, the Danube Riverbank, Andrássy Avenue, the Millennium Underground Railway, and Heroes' Square. Other notable spots in Buda are Gellért Hill, the tomb of Gül Baba, Rudas Baths from Ottoman times, and ruins of Old Buda and Aquincum. In the Buda Hills, you can find a chairlift, a children's railway, and caves with interesting rock formations.

In Pest, important landmarks include the Hungarian Parliament Building, St. Stephen's Basilica, and the Inner City Parish Church. There are also many museums and beautiful parks like City Park, which has Vajdahunyad Castle and the Budapest Zoo. Budapest is famous for its hot spas and holds many fun events throughout the year.

In Pest County, interesting places to visit include Gödöllő with its Royal Castle and Arboretum, Ráckeve with its Serbian cathedral and Savoya Castle, and Szentendre with its Baroque town square. Other highlights are Vác with its cathedral and triumphal arch, and Visegrád with its castle. The Pilis Mountains are great for hiking, and there are several parks and natural spots to explore.
