Foothill Freeway

A view of the 210 Freeway in Pasadena, California.

The Foothill Freeway is a freeway in the Greater Los Angeles area of California. It runs from the Sylmar district of Los Angeles all the way east to Redlands.

The western part of the freeway is called Interstate 210 (I-210) and starts at I-5, ending at SR 57 in Glendora. The eastern part is called State Route 210 (SR 210) and ends at I-10.

The name "Foothill Freeway" comes from Foothill Boulevard and the San Gabriel Mountains, which the freeway runs close to for most of its length. It connects the northeastern suburbs of Los Angeles with the Inland Empire.

In the past, the Foothill Freeway had many different numbers, and the I-210 route has changed over time. East of Pasadena, the freeway runs close to the old path of U.S. Route 66.

By 2007, the part of the freeway between I-5 and SR 259 in San Bernardino met the rules for Interstate Highway standards. In February 2020, work began to bring the eastern part up to standard. This three-year project added new lanes from Sterling Avenue in San Bernardino to San Bernardino Avenue in Redlands. Even though the work finished in September 2023, the eastern end is still called "Route 210".

Route description

Route 210 is a freeway in California. It starts near Tunnel Station at Route 5 and ends in Redlands at Route 10. The road goes through cities like San Fernando, Glendale, Pasadena, and San Dimas. From Sylmar in Los Angeles, it heads southeast through the San Fernando and Crescenta Valleys. After Pasadena, it turns east and meets Route 57 in Glendora before reaching its end at Route 10 in Redlands.

The part of Route 210 east of Route 57 is not an Interstate Highway. Some train tracks run along the middle of the road between Pasadena and Arcadia. Route 210 is split into two parts. The western part starts near San Dimas and goes east through Fontana, meeting Route 15 and Route 215 in San Bernardino. The eastern part curves south and ends at Route 10 in Redlands.

Route 210 is important for travel and the economy. In 1991, it was named the Foothill Freeway. In 2023, there was a proposal to possibly rename it.

History

Construction on the Foothill Freeway began in 1958. The first part opened in 1966, going from La Cañada Flintridge through Pasadena. More parts were added over the next few years, with the final part in the San Fernando Valley finishing in 1981.

1955 map of the planned Interstates in the Greater Los Angeles Area. The original proposal for present-day I-210 includes its original eastern terminus in Pomona.

In the 1990s, work started to extend the freeway further east. A big section from Glendora to Fontana was done in 2003, and the last part, connecting to I-215, opened in 2007. Plans are in place to change more parts of the freeway to an Interstate highway in the future.

Future

Leaders from Highland and San Bernardino are working together to improve travel near the Foothill Freeway. They want to make it easier to get on and off the freeway around Highland Avenue. One idea is to build a new place to enter the freeway at Victoria Avenue, a bit further east.
