The High Tatras or High Tatra Mountains are a beautiful mountain range along the border between northern Slovakia and southern Poland. In Slovakia, they are in the Prešov Region, and in Poland, they are part of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. These mountains are part of the larger Tatra Mountains chain.

The High Tatras are known for their amazing views, with tall peaks, deep valleys, and pretty forests. They are a favorite place for people who like hiking, climbing, and being outdoors. The area has a rich history and culture, with many towns and villages nearby that have interesting stories.

These mountains are also important for wildlife. Many different plants and animals live there, some only found in this special place. Because of this, the High Tatras are protected to keep them beautiful and safe for everyone to enjoy in the future.

Description

Morskie Oko ("Sea Eye"), the largest lake in the Tatra mountains, is found at an elevation of 1,395m and is surrounded by peaks that rise about 1,000m above it.

The High Tatras are a beautiful mountain range along the border of northern Slovakia and southern Poland. They are part of the larger Tatra Mountains. Most of the range, including the highest peaks, lies in Slovakia. The tallest peak is Gerlachovský štít, standing at 2,655 metres (8,711 feet).

The High Tatras have many peaks over 2,500 metres and are special because they have alpine landscapes and habitats, which are rare in the Carpathian Mountains. The first cross-border national park in Europe was created here. Tatra National Park was founded in Slovakia in 1948 and in Poland in 1954. These parks together protect a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

The High Tatras are home to many rare animals and plants. You can find species like the Tatra chamois, along with predators such as the Eurasian brown bear, lynx, marten, wolf, and fox. Alpine marmots are also common. The plants include special species like the Tatra scurvy-grass, yellow mountain saxifrage, net-leaved willow, Norway spruce, Swiss pine, and European larch.
