Indonesia at the 2008 Summer Olympics

Indonesia took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China, from August 8 to August 24, 2008. The Olympics is a big event where athletes from many countries come together to compete in many sports.

In these games, twenty-two athletes from Indonesia had earned their spots by doing well in qualifying events. In addition, three more athletes were allowed to join through something called a wildcard entry. This was an important moment for Indonesia, as it showed the country's support for its athletes and their hard work.

Indonesia sent athletes to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. They won a few medals.

One athlete from Indonesia won a silver medal in badminton. Another won a bronze medal in athletics. These were good achievements for the country.

Archery

Indonesia sent archers to the 2008 Summer Olympics for the ninth time, hoping to win the country's first gold medal in archery. Two women from Indonesia, Ika Yuliana Rochmawati and Rina Dewi Puspitasari, earned spots by doing well at the 2008 Asian championships.

Rina Dewi Puspitasari competed for Indonesia in women's individual archery. She was born in Bojonegoro Regency on the island of Java, near the city of Surabaya. This was her second Olympics. In Beijing, she finished in 46th place. During the first round, she shot against other athletes. She scored 620 points overall. On August 11, she faced an archer from Russia, Miroslava Dagbaeva. They both scored the same points, but Dagbaeva won, so Puspitasari did not move on to later rounds.

Athletics

Suryo Agung Wibowo from Surakarta in central Java competed for Indonesia in the men's 100 meters dash at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He was 24 years old. In his race on August 14, he finished in 10.46 seconds and did not move on to later rounds.

Dedeh Erawati was Indonesia's only female athlete in track events at the Beijing Olympics. She ran in the women's 100 meters hurdles. Erawati, born in Sumedang near Bandung, was 28 years old. In her race on August 17, she finished in 13.49 seconds and also did not advance to later rounds.

Badminton

Two Indonesian athletes played badminton at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Taufik Hidayat played in men's singles. He won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. In Beijing, he played against an athlete from Malaysia in the first round but did not go further.

Sony Dwi Kuncoro also played in men's singles. He won a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics. In Beijing, he won his first two matches but lost in the quarterfinals to an athlete from Malaysia, who later won the silver medal.

Sailing

I Gusti Made Oka Sulaksana, also called Oka Sulaksana, was Indonesia's only sailor at the Beijing Olympics. He raced in the men's windsurfer event. Sulaksana is from Sanur on the island of Bali. He had also raced in the Olympics in 1996, 2000, and 2004. At the 2008 games, he was 37 years old.

In the races, Sulaksana placed between 22nd and 31st in each race, and he did not finish the last race. Overall, he finished 27th out of 35 sailors. He was ahead of Belarus's Mikalai Zhukavets and behind the United States' Benjamin Barger. The gold medalist, Tom Ashley from New Zealand, did better than Sulaksana.

Shooting

Yosheefin Shila Prasasti was Indonesia’s only shooter at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She competed in the women’s air rifle 10 meters event. She was 26 years old at the time. She scored points in four rounds and finished in 24th place overall.

Swimming

Donny Budiarto Utomo represented Indonesia in swimming at the Beijing Olympics. He swam in the men's 200 meters butterfly. He was 29 years old. In the first round on August 11, he finished last in his heat and did not move to the next round.

Fibriani Ratna Marita was Indonesia's only female swimmer at the Beijing Olympics. She swam in the women's 200 meters individual medley. She was 14 years old, the youngest on the team. In the first round on August 11, she finished sixth in her heat and did not move to later rounds.

Weightlifting

Indonesia had athletes in weightlifting at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Sandow Weldemar Nasution competed in the middleweight class and finished 11th. Edi Kurniawan competed in the lightweight class and placed 12th. Triyatno competed in the featherweight class and won a bronze medal. Eko Yuli Irawan competed in the bantamweight class and also won a bronze medal.

The only female weightlifter from Indonesia was Raema Lisa Rumbewas. She had won silver medals in past Olympics. In Beijing, she placed fourth in her event.
