A polity is a group of people who share a common identity and work together through rules and leaders. It means any group that can make its own decisions and take care of its resources. Polities can be small, like the leaders of a corporation, or large, like governments of whole countries.

Polities can be organized in many ways. Some are republics where leaders are chosen by voting. Others are realms where a monarch leads by birthright. Even cities, led by mayors, can be polities.

Today, the most important polities are usually federal and unitary states, often called countries. These countries work together in groups like the United Nations, which helps manage relationships between different polities around the world.

Overview

Frontispiece of Leviathan, 1690

A polity is a group of people who share an identity and work together under an organized system. This system can be small, like a town, or large, like a country with many laws.

Polities can be many different things. They might be towns, countries, big empires, or even groups that move around. Some groups, like those from old times on the Eurasian Steppe, didn’t stay in one place but still worked together.

People can belong to more than one polity. For example, someone might be part of a smaller group inside a larger country, like the Kurds in Iraqi Kurdistan, while also being a member of the bigger country of Iraq. Even groups that aren’t governments, like companies or communities, can act as polities if they have ways to make decisions together.
