History
In the 5th century, after Roman soldiers left, a place called "Remacum" became known as "Remich".
In the 8th century, a king named Pepin the Short gave land called "Hof Remich" to a group called the Benedictine at St. Maximin's Abbey in Trier. In 882, a group called the Normans destroyed the settlement. Some old walls from the town's defenses, like the St. Nicolas gate, can still be seen today. This gate was once the main entrance to the town.
The town's walls were torn down in 1687 by soldiers serving Louis XIV.
Remich had visits from important leaders, including William II, Grand-Duke of Luxembourg and King of the Netherlands, in 1844, and later by his son, William III, in 1855.
The first bridge over the Moselle River was built in 1866. It was destroyed during World War II, but new bridges were built later. Today, boats can travel on the Moselle River all year.
Climate
Remich has an oceanic climate. The average temperature each year is about 10.7 °C. July is the warmest month, and January is the coldest. The town gets about 711.8 millimetres of rain each year. December is usually the wettest month, and April is the driest. The temperature in Remich can vary from very cold to quite warm.
