Saturday

Saturday is the day of the week that comes between Friday and Sunday. Long ago, the Romans named this day diēs Sāturnī, which means "Saturn's Day," after the god Saturn. They believed that Saturn, and his planet, had an influence on the first hour of this day.

The name for Saturday spread into many West Germanic languages. We can see it in old forms such as satersdach and saterdach in Middle Low German, saterdag in Middle Dutch (which is still used today as zaterdag in Modern Dutch), and Sæternesdæġ, Sæterndæġ, or Sæterdæġ in Old English.

The seven-day week started with the Jewish tradition. They rested on the seventh day, called the Sabbath. This idea was then used by Christianity and the Roman Empire.

The days were named from old ideas about stars and planets. Writers like Vettius Valens, Dio Cassius, and Chaucer wrote about these ideas. The days are named after planets, which were named after ancient gods and goddesses.

Later, Germanic peoples used the Roman system but linked it to their own gods. For Saturday, they kept the Roman name because none of their gods matched the Roman god Saturn. This is why some Germanic languages have different names for Saturday.

The international standard ISO 8601 names Saturday as the sixth day of the week. But the Abrahamic religions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—call Saturday the seventh day of the week. Because of this, many of these groups still use Saturday as their seventh day.

For Jews, Messianics, Seventh Day Baptists, and Seventh-day Adventists, the seventh day of the week, called Shabbat (or Sabbath for Seventh-day Adventists), starts at sunset on Friday and ends at nightfall on Saturday. It is a special day of rest.

Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches think Saturday (Sabbath) is different from the Lord's Day (Sunday). Some Protestant groups, like Seventh-day Adventists, believe the Lord's Day is the Sabbath, based on the fourth commandment from Exodus 20:8, and not Sunday.
