The Timișoara metropolitan area is a group of towns and villages that work together in Timiș County. It includes the city of Timișoara and 14 smaller places around it. These places joined together in 2008 to help each other grow and improve. This group is part of a bigger organization called the Federation of Metropolitan Areas and Urban Agglomerations in Romania, which helps big groups of towns work better together.

History

The idea to create a metropolitan area around Timișoara started in 1999–2000. At that time, Timișoara joined with six nearby villages (Dumbrăvița, Ghiroda, Giroc, Moșnița Nouă, Săcălaz and Sânmihaiu Român) to work together. They made plans for future growth.

Later, in 2004, the local government formed a special group to guide the area.

In 2008, a special law set the official boundaries of the metropolitan area.

Geography

The Timișoara metropolitan area covers 1,079.54 km2. This includes 129.27 km2 for the city of Timișoara and 950.27 km2 for the surrounding areas connected to the city. This area is about 3.4% of the West development region and about 12.5% of Timiș County.

Administration

The Timișoara metropolitan area is managed by the Timișoara Growth Pole Intercommunity Development Association. It has a General Assembly as its main decision-making group, which includes all members of the Association. The current leader of the Association is the mayor of Timișoara. There are 31 representatives in the General Assembly. A Board of Directors helps run the Association, and it includes the president and two other members chosen for two years.

Subdivisions

The Timișoara metropolitan area has one main city, Timișoara, and 14 surrounding communes. These communes are Becicherecu Mic, Bucovăț, Dudeștii Noi, Dumbrăvița, Ghiroda, Giarmata, Giroc, Moșnița Nouă, Orțișoara, Pișchia, Remetea Mare, Săcălaz, Sânmihaiu Român and Șag. Together, they have 35 villages.

Because Timișoara and its nearby areas keep growing, there are ideas to add more communes to the metropolitan area. These could include areas to the south like Liebling, Parța, Pădureni and Sacoșu Turcesc, possibly also Peciu Nou. To the east, Chevereșu Mare and the town of Recaș might join, maybe along with Racovița, Topolovățu Mare and Buziaș. In the north, Bogda, Fibiș and Sânandrei, possibly with Mașloc, could be added. And to the west, Biled and Satchinez might also become part of the area.
