The University of L'Aquila (Italian: Università degli Studi dell'Aquila) is a public research university in the city of L'Aquila in Central Italy.

It was officially started in 1964, but its story goes back to 1596. Today, the university has nine departments where students can learn many different subjects. It helps with learning and discovery in the area, supporting both the local community and people farther away.

History

The University of L'Aquila started in the late 1500s when the Jesuits helped bring learning to the city. Many leaders tried to start schools there, but the university was not officially opened until 1964.

In 2009, an earthquake hurt some of the university's buildings and made it hard for students. Since then, the university has been fixing things and making new spaces for everyone.

Organization

The University of L'Aquila has seven departments. They are:

  • Department of Biotechnological and Applied Clinical Sciences
  • Department of Industrial and Information Engineering and Economics
  • Department of Human Studies
  • Department of Civil, Construction-Architectural and Environmental Engineering
  • Department of Physical and Chemical Sciences
  • Department of Information Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics
  • Department of Life, Health and Environmental Sciences

Features

The University of L'Aquila has many special places and centers that help students learn and stay active. You can visit the Alpine Botanical Garden of Campo Imperatore or the Orto Botanico dell'Università dell'Aquila to see interesting plants. There are also centers like CETEMPS, which works on warning systems for bad weather, and DEWS, which studies advanced electronics.

The university has a Microscopy Centre to help with science studies and a Language Centre where students can learn languages like English, French, and Spanish. Students also have a Sport Center with fields for football, rugby, tennis, volleyball, basketball, and places for fitness, climbing, and martial arts. The university works with a local swimming pool and a ski resort near the city.
