Route description
SR 71 begins in Corona at SR 91 and runs for 15 miles. It starts as an expressway, then turns into a freeway before ending at the Kellogg Interchange in San Dimas, where it meets I-10 and SR 57.
This road connects important cities in Los Angeles County and Riverside County. It is often used instead of nearby roads like SR 57 and I-15. In some parts, there are special lanes for cars with more than one person. The road has different numbers of lanes along its length.
History
State Route 71, or SR 71, has changed a lot over the years. In 1934, it started in San Diego and went north to near Claremont. Later, its route was changed, and in 1973, it was shortened to end in Corona.
In 1998, a part of the road called the Chino Valley Freeway was finished. In 2008, work started on a project in Pomona to make traveling easier, and this work was done by 2011. In 2025, a new ramp was added to help drivers move between two highways more safely.
Future
The City of Pomona is working with Caltrans to improve a part of the road between Rio Rancho Road and Mission Boulevard. They are changing it from a smaller road to a bigger, faster highway with more lanes. By December 2016, all traffic lights were taken away. Some smaller roads that used to let cars get on and off the highway can no longer be used for cars going north, but they could still be used for cars going south until 2021. Since 2021, these roads are now fully closed for southbound traffic. The road is being updated to meet highway standards, and this work is expected to finish by 2027.
Exit list
Except where a letter is in front, the distances on State Route 71 were measured on the road as it was in 1964, based on a west-to-east direction. These distances might not be the same as they are today. Letters like R, M, L, and T show changes that happened to the road since then. Some parts of the road that were not built or given back to local control are not listed. The numbers start over in each county, and you can see the starting and ending distances for each county in the county column.
