Interstate 15 in California
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Interstate 15 in California is a very important road that helps people travel north and south through the state. It connects big places like San Diego, Riverside, and San Bernardino. This road is part of a much longer highway that goes all the way to the border with Canada, passing through several states like Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, and Montana.
Many people use Interstate 15 every day to go between San Diego and areas known as the Inland Empire, as well as to travel to places like Las Vegas, Nevada and other parts of the west.
In the southern part of San Diego, the road changes from an Interstate to a state highway called State Route 15. This shorter part of the road is being improved so it can become part of Interstate 15 in the future. When you add this smaller piece to the rest of the road, the whole Route 15 in California is almost 295 miles long.
Different parts of Interstate 15 have special names, like the Escondido Freeway or the Ontario Freeway, depending on where you are on the road.
Route description
Route 15 is a major highway in California, connecting San Diego, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. It is part of both the state’s Route 15 and Interstate 15, stretching from San Diego all the way to the Nevada border near Stateline, Nevada. This highway is vital for travel between San Diego and the Inland Empire, as well as for people heading to Las Vegas and other parts of the Intermountain West.
In San Diego County, Route 15 starts near Harbor Drive and runs through several cities, including San Diego, Escondido, and Temecula. It has different local names along the way, such as the Escondido Freeway and the Tony Gwynn Memorial Freeway. Further north, it passes through the Inland Empire cities of Murrieta, Lake Elsinore, and Ontario before reaching the Cajon Pass, a key mountain pass connecting Southern California to areas further north and east. The highway continues through the High Desert cities of Hesperia and Victorville before arriving in Barstow and finally crossing into Nevada at Primm, just southwest of Las Vegas.
History
I-15 replaced US 395 between San Diego and Temecula, US 66 between San Bernardino and Barstow, and US 91 north of Barstow.
I-15 was first planned to run from I-10 near San Bernardino through the Cajon Pass to Las Vegas. California asked to extend it south to San Diego to connect important military bases like March ARB and MCAS Miramar. US 395 was temporarily signed as TEMP-15, and the old I-15 between Devore and San Bernardino became part of today’s I-215.
On January 24, 1957, the state defined the Escondido Freeway as today’s Routes 15 and 215 from Route 805 to Route 91. This was once US 395. Later, it was extended south to Route 8 in 1979. The segment from the San Diego County Line to the I-15/I-215 interchange became the Temecula Valley Freeway in 1990.
The Corona Freeway was originally defined in 1958 to run along Routes 71, 91, and 15 from west of Pomona to Route 215. In 1990, part of I-15 between the San Diego County Line and Bundy Canyon Road was renamed the Temecula Valley Freeway. In 1993, SR 71 was officially made part of the Chino Valley Freeway, though some signs still called it the “Corona Freeway” for a while.
Present SR 15 began after I-15 was created in 1968. Because I-15 ended at I-8, SR 15 used 40th Street and Wabash Boulevard in San Diego until it joined I-5. The part between Adams Avenue and I-805 in City Heights stayed a city street for many years, only finishing in January 2000. This made it one of the last freeways built in San Diego, and it’s sometimes called the 40th Street Freeway.
Most of I-15 from Devore to the Nevada border was improved starting in 2002 for $349 million. Work finished by winter 2009 and included adding truck lanes, repaving roads, adding exit numbers, updating rest areas, rebuilding bridges in Baker, and moving an agriculture inspection station to the Nevada border, which opened in August 2018.
Future
The road called California SR 15 from I-5 to I-8 in San Diego might soon be called I-15. This will happen when it gets updated to meet certain road rules, especially where it meets SR 94. Right now, some parts are tricky with left exits and hard-to-see joins, but plans are to fix and widen both roads.
In 2018, a group in San Bernardino County approved plans for new fast lanes on I-15. Work on these fast lanes, which will be about 8 miles long, should finish by 2028.
In 2020, a company called Brightline agreed to use the space next to I-15 between Victor Valley and the border with Nevada for a fast train service called Brightline West.
