Estonia at the Olympics

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

Estonia first competed as a nation at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, just two years after declaring independence from the Russian and German Empires in 1918. The Estonian National Olympic Committee was established in 1923, marking the start of Estonia's organized participation in the Olympic Games.

Estonia took part in both Summer and Winter Olympics until the country was invaded and occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940. During this time, from 1952 to 1988, Estonian athletes competed under the Soviet flag. A notable moment during this period was when the 1980 Summer Olympics sailing regatta was held in Tallinn.

After regaining independence in 1991, Estonia returned to the Olympic stage as an independent nation. The country made its Winter Olympics debut as an independent nation at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville and also participated in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

Some of Estonia's proudest Olympic moments include Jüri Lossman winning silver in the men's marathon and Alfred Neuland taking gold in the men's lightweight weightlifting event at the same Games. Later, at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Andrus Veerpalu won Estonia's first Winter Olympic gold in the men's 15 km cross-country skiing event.

Since regaining independence, Estonia has taken part in every Summer and Winter Olympics. The country has earned most of its medals in wrestling (11), weightlifting (7), cross-country skiing (7), and athletics (6).
