Basketball started in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was invented by James Naismith, a Canadian teacher who wanted a safer game than football that could be played indoors during winter. Naismith was 31 years old when he created the sport, and it quickly became popular.

James Naismith invented basketball in 1891 at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts.

As the years went by, basketball grew in popularity, first in American colleges and then in professional leagues. The National Basketball Association (NBA) began in 1946 and became very successful, turning into a big business by the end of the century. Today, basketball is an important part of culture in America and many other countries around the world.

Early history

Invention of the game

Basketball started in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was created by Dr. James Naismith, a teacher at YMCA International Training School (now Springfield College). Naismith made this game to help athletes stay active during winter. The first game used peach baskets and a soccer ball. Players had to throw the ball into the baskets to score points. After each score, someone had to climb a ladder to get the ball out of the basket.

Naismith's original rules

Naismith wrote thirteen simple rules for basketball. Players could throw or hit the ball with their hands, but they couldn’t run with it. There were rules about fouls and how to keep track of scores. Games were fifteen minutes long with a break in the middle.

The first basketball game

The very first basketball game was played on December 21, 1891. Naismith’s students played using the rules he created. One player, William Chase, scored the first point. At first, the baskets had no holes, so someone had to climb a ladder to get the ball out after each score. Later, small holes were added so a stick could push the ball out.

Women in basketball

Soon after basketball began, a teacher named Senda Berenson at Smith College learned about the game and started playing it with her students. The first women’s game between two schools was played just eleven months later, between the University of California and Miss Head’s School. By 1899, rules for women’s basketball were made, and the sport grew quickly in schools and colleges.

YMCA, U.S. Army spread development

The YMCA helped spread basketball across the United States, Canada, and the world. In 1893, Mel Rideout set up the first game in Europe in Paris, in Montmartre. Around the same time, Bob Gailey brought basketball to Tianjin, China, Duncan Patton to India, Genzabaro Ishikawa to Japan, and C. Hareek to Persia.

When World War I began in 1914, the U.S. Army joined the fight in Europe in 1917. American soldiers took basketball with them wherever they went. Many physical education teachers also knew the game and helped teach it. James Naismith himself spent two years working with the YMCA in France during this time.

Early professional leagues, teams, and organizations

The first professional basketball league started in 1898 with six teams in the National Basketball League. The Trenton Nationals were the first champions, followed by teams like the New York Wanderers. This league stopped in 1904.

Later, many small competitions happened, but some teams stood out. The Original Celtics were very famous and called themselves the "World’s Basketball Champions." They traveled to different towns for games, organized by Jim Furey like a circus. The Original Celtics played successfully from 1922 to 1928 but then split up because of problems with ownership. Even though they share a name with today’s Boston Celtics in the NBA, they are not directly related—the modern team started in 1946.

In 1922, the first team with all African American players was formed, called the Rens, also known as the New York Renaissance. They often played against the Original Celtics and won the first World Professional Basketball Tournament in 1939. The Rens stopped playing together in 1949.

During the 1920s and 1930s, important leagues included the Eastern Basket Ball League, the Metropolitan Basketball League, and the American Basketball League.

Basketball in American colleges

Further information: College basketball

Basketball became very popular in American colleges soon after it was invented. The first college game against a team outside the school happened in 1893 when Vanderbilt University played against a local YMCA team. Not long after, other colleges began playing too.

The first game between two college teams was in 1895, and by 1900, basketball was being played at colleges all over the country. The NCAA men's basketball tournament, a big yearly event, started in 1939.

First international games

Basketball grew quickly after it reached Europe. In 1909, the first international game happened in Saint Petersburg, where a local team named Mayak Saint Petersburg played against a team from the United States. A big event happened in 1919 near Paris at the Inter-Allied Games. The United States team, led by Max Friedman, won against Italy and France. Soon after, basketball became very popular in France and Italy.

The game was shown as a demonstration sport at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, United States, and again at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.

Formation of FIBA

Basketball was growing around the world, and on June 18, 1932, eight countries came together to create an international organization. This group formed the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in Geneva. Their work helped make basketball an official sport in the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936. The United States men's team won the first Olympic gold medal.

In 1935, the first EuroBasket tournament took place in Geneva, Switzerland. Ten teams competed, and Latvia won the championship, with Spain taking silver and Czechoslovakia winning bronze. The first World Championship was held in Argentina in 1950.

NBA

The Basketball Association of America began on June 6, 1946, in New York City. In 1949, it merged with another league and became the National Basketball Association, known as the NBA. Today, the NBA is the most popular professional basketball league in the world.

Many rules have changed since the NBA started. These changes helped shape the game we know today. For example, in 1951, the free-throw lane got wider to make the game fairer. In 1954, the 24-second shot clock was added so teams had to shoot faster. And in the 1979–1980 season, the three-point line was introduced to make the game more exciting.

Famous players like Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Larry Bird helped make the NBA very popular again in the 1980s. Other great players like Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, and Michael Jordan also joined the league and made it even better.

Modern-day NBA

The NBA has helped make basketball popular all over the world. Famous players have played important roles in this. Because of Michael Jordan, basketball began to reach people in many countries, especially with the 1992 United States men's Olympic basketball team, called the Dream Team.

After Michael Jordan stopped playing, other players like Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant helped keep basketball popular. Kobe Bryant won many championships and helped make the sport well-known, especially in China. Another big star is LeBron James. He joined the NBA in 2003 and became one of the most famous players in the world. He has played for several teams and won many championships.

Players from other countries have also helped grow the popularity of basketball. Yao Ming, the first Chinese player to be chosen as the top pick in the NBA, brought more attention to the sport in Asia.

The way basketball is played has changed over time. In the past, big players were very important, but now teams focus more on passing the ball and working together. Players like Stephen Curry have made taking three-point shots very popular.

American Basketball Association

The American Basketball Association (ABA) started in 1967 as another basketball league beside the NBA. It had a different style of play and new rules, like the three-point shot. Famous player Julius Erving helped make the league popular with his exciting, high-flying moves. The ABA used colorful balls and fun promotions to draw crowds. Because it wasn’t as well-known or profitable as the NBA, the ABA decided to join the NBA in 1976. Four of its best teams—the New York Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, and San Antonio Spurs—became part of the NBA. The NBA then adopted some of the ABA’s fun ideas, like the three-point shot.

African Americans in basketball

Because of rules that kept people apart based on their skin color, special basketball teams made just for Black players were created in 1904. These teams played in many cities like New York, Washington, Chicago, and Pittsburgh.

Some of the first organized teams were the Smart Set Athletic Club and the St. Christopher Club. In 1907, these teams and others formed a league in New York City. That same year, the Smart Set team played the first game between two Black teams from different cities.

Later, the first professional team made only for Black players was started in 1922. By the 1940s, Black players began joining the main basketball leagues. This helped bring the sport to people all around the world.

Olympic basketball

Basketball was invented by James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891. It quickly became popular in the United States as an indoor sport and later spread worldwide. The International Basketball Federation was formed in 1932 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The first Olympic basketball tournament happened in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, thanks to efforts by coach Phog Allen. The American team won the first seven tournaments without losing a game. The U.S. lost for the first time in (/wiki/Basketball_at_the_1972_Summer_Olympics) to the Soviet Union.

In 1992, the U.S. sent its famous "Dream Team" with top professional players, winning easily. Since then, the U.S. has often won but sometimes faced strong competition. Other countries like Argentina, Spain, and Lithuania have also performed well.

The first women’s Olympic basketball tournament was in 1976, with the Soviet Union winning the first gold medal. The U.S. women’s team has been very successful since the 1990s.
