Kenya at the Olympics
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Kenya made its debut at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne and has since become one of the most successful countries in Olympic sports, especially in running. The nation has taken part in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except for the 1976 Montreal and 1980 Moscow Games, which it did not attend for political reasons.
Kenya's Olympic success is mostly in track and field events, especially in middle- and long-distance running, where Kenyan athletes have often won gold medals. They have also won medals in boxing, especially from the 1960s through the 1980s. Although Kenya is not usually known for cold-weather sports, it has also taken part in five Winter Olympic Games.
Kenyan athletes have won 124 medals in total, all in boxing and track and field, making Kenya the most successful African country at the Olympics. In recent years, more Kenyan women have started winning medals, showing great progress in female sports. Some athletes born in Kenya now compete for other countries, like Bahrain, in the Olympics. The group that organizes Kenya’s Olympic teams is called the National Olympic Committee of Kenya, which was founded in 1955.
