Norway men's national ice hockey team

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

The Norwegian ice hockey team competing in the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The Norway men's national ice hockey team is the national ice hockey team from Norway. They compete in big tournaments like the IIHF World Championships. The team is led by the Norwegian Ice Hockey Association and coached by Petter Thoresen. Playing ice hockey is very popular in Norway, and the team brings together skilled players to represent their country with pride and teamwork.

History

Norway prior to the 1937 World Championships, their first international tournament. They finished in ninth place.

The Norwegian Ice Hockey Association started in 1934 and joined the International Ice Hockey Federation in 1935. However, they didn’t have enough money to form a national team until 1937. Norway’s first game was on February 17, 1937, against Czechoslovakia, which they lost 0–7. After World War II, Norway’s ice hockey improved with new teams and better facilities. The team had a successful period from 1949 to 1953, including their first win at the 1949 World Championships.

In the 1950s, Norway kept challenging strong teams. But in the 1960s, the sport grew less popular because mild winters made it hard to create natural ice rinks. Norway was sometimes unable to compete in big tournaments like the Winter Olympics. By the late 1970s and 1980s, Norwegian players started showing more interest again. The team qualified for the 1980 Winter Olympics.

In the 1990s, Norway stabilized in the middle ranks of international competition. After some changes in coaching, Roy Johansen led the team from 2001 to 2016. Under his guidance, Norway moved up thirteen places in the world rankings, from 21st in 2004 to 8th in 2012. He was replaced by Petter Thoresen in 2016.
