Pictograms of Olympic sports - Ski jumping

Ski jumping at the 1988 Winter Olympics was a big part of the games, with three exciting events held between February 14 and February 24. These events took place at the Canada Olympic Park in Calgary. One of the most interesting changes was the addition of a new event—the team event—which was the first new ski jumping event since 1964.

One of the most memorable moments came from Britain’s Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards. Even though he finished last in both individual events and had less than half the points of the person just above him, his fun-loving spirit and determination made him a celebrity. His story showed that it’s not always about winning; sometimes, just trying your best and showing courage can make a big impact.

Finland led the medal table, winning all three gold medals. Matti Nykänen won both individual events and helped the Finnish team to victory. This was the first year with three ski jumping events, making Nykänen the most successful ski jumper in a single Games.

Yugoslavia won two medals, which were the only ones the country would ever win in ski jumping. Later, in 2002, Slovenia—where all four Yugoslavian team members were from—won its first medal as an independent country.
