Xfinity Mobile Arena is a large indoor space in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where many exciting events happen. It is most famous for being the home of three sports teams: the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team, the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team, and the Philadelphia Wings lacrosse team. The arena is part of a bigger sports area that also includes places where football and baseball games are played.
The arena was finished in 1996 and has had several names over the years because of sponsorship deals. It was first called Spectrum II, then CoreStates Center, First Union Center, Wachovia Center, and Wells Fargo Center before getting its current name. Besides sports games, the arena has hosted big concerts, wrestling shows, and even important political meetings.
In 2025, plans were announced to build a brand new arena nearby that will open by 2030. The old arena will be torn down once the new one is ready.
Naming rights
Before it was built, the arena was called "Spectrum II". It was first named after a local company that agreed to pay for the name for many years.
Over time, the name changed because of business deals between big companies. It became the Wells Fargo Center in 2010.
In 2024, Wells Fargo decided not to keep the naming rights after 2025. In 2025, the arena got its new name: Xfinity Mobile Arena. This name will stay until the 2030โ2031 season. Xfinity Mobile is a service of Xfinity, which is part of Comcast. The new name became official in August 2025.
Facilities
The arena can seat 20,478 people for basketball games and 19,173 for hockey and lacrosse games. There are also special seating areas, restaurants, and clubs for visitors to enjoy.
In 2005, the arena set a record for the most people at an indoor hockey game in Pennsylvania. The record was broken again in 2010 during an important hockey final. In 2017, it also set a record for the most people at a college basketball game in the state.
The arena has had many updates over the years, including new scoreboards and special seating areas. It also added a new outdoor-style lounge area with places to eat and relax.
Concerts
The Xfinity Mobile Arena has been the stage for many famous concerts. It opened its doors with a private concert by Ray Charles on August 12, 1996, followed by a public show by Oasis on September 2, 1996. Over the years, many talented artists have performed there.
Billy Joel holds a special record at the arena, having sold out 48 concerts. Bruce Springsteen also has many fans there, with 56 sellout shows honored with a banner. Pearl Jam joined these legends by playing two shows in 2016 and earning a banner for ten sellout performances.
Tenants
The Xfinity Mobile Arena is home to several sports teams. The main teams that play there all the time are the Philadelphia Flyers from the National Hockey League, the Philadelphia 76ers from the National Basketball Association, and the Philadelphia Wings from the National Lacrosse League.
Some teams and events use the arena when they need more space. For example, the Villanova Wildcats men's basketball team from the NCAA's Big East Conference plays big games here when their smaller arena, the Finneran Pavilion, is too small. The Big 5 Classic tournament, featuring teams from the Philadelphia Big 5, is held here every year on the first Saturday of December.
In the past, other teams like the Philadelphia Soul from the Arena Football League and the earlier version of the Philadelphia Wings also played here.
Notable events
The Xfinity Mobile Arena has hosted many important events over the years. It was the venue for major political gatherings, including the 2000 Republican National Convention and the 2016 Democratic National Convention.
In the world of sports, the arena has seen exciting moments like the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals, where hockey fans cheered loudly. It has also hosted basketball finals, wrestling matches, and even figure skating championships. Some memorable sports events include the 2001 NBA Finals, where the Los Angeles Lakers celebrated their championship, and the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals, where the Chicago Blackhawks won the title.
Besides sports, the arena has been a stage for television shows, esports competitions, and other special events, making it a busy and lively place for people to enjoy different activities.
Controversy
In October 2019, staff at the arena asked fans to stop shouting certain phrases during a basketball game between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Guangzhou Loong Lions. The fans were asked not to shout things that could be upsetting to others.
