The 1936 Summer Olympics were fun games held in Berlin, the capital of Germany. They started on August 1 and ended on August 16, 1936. These games were called the Games of the XI Olympiad and were a big event where athletes from many countries came together to compete in many sports.
Berlin was chosen to host the Olympics after a vote. Many cities wanted to host the games, but Berlin won. To make these Olympics special, they built a huge new stadium and other sports arenas. The 1936 Games were also the first to be televised, so people in 41 countries could watch.
One of the most famous athletes was Jesse Owens from the United States. He won four gold medals, which means he was the best in his events! Germany won the most medals overall, but the United States also did very well. These were the last Olympics before a difficult time called the Second World War; the next games didn’t happen until 1948.
The Olympics had many exciting events. There were 129 events in 25 different activities across 19 sports. Some new sports, like basketball and handball, were included for the first time. Athletes from 49 nations took part, which was more than any Olympics before.
The opening ceremony was held at the Berlin Olympic Stadium on August 1, 1936. Athletes from each country marched in, wearing their own special costumes. Greece, where the Olympics began, entered first, and Germany, the host country, entered last. After a speech, the games were officially opened. This was also the first time an Olympic torch relay was used. A young man ran through the stadium to light a special flame that burned throughout the games.
Many countries joined the games, including some that were participating for the first time, like Afghanistan, Bermuda, Bolivia, Costa Rica, and Liechtenstein. Other nations that came back to the games were Bulgaria, Chile, Egypt, Iceland, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Peru, Romania and Turkey.
The games had many wonderful athletes. India won the gold medal in field hockey. Swimmer Rie Mastenbroek from the Netherlands won three gold medals. Many athletes from different countries achieved great feats during these games.
