Welcome to Bergen!
Bergen is a lovely city in Norway. It is the second-biggest city in the country, just a little smaller than Oslo. Bergen is special because it is surrounded by mountains, earning it the nickname “city of seven mountains.” The city sits on a peninsula, with many parts on islands.
A Long History
People have lived in Bergen for a very long time. Trading began there as early as the 1020s. The city was founded in 1070 by King Olav Kyrre. For a time, Bergen was even the capital of Norway! It became an important place for trading, especially for the Hanseatic League.
Today’s Bergen
Now, Bergen is a busy port city. It is important for fishing, shipping, and learning. Many students go to school here. The city has a mild winter but gets a lot of rain—about 200 rainy days a year! Bergen is easy to get around with big bridges, a light rail system, and an airport.
Fun Traditions
Bergen has special traditions, like young groups called buekorps. These groups march and have fun together. The city also has its own way of talking, called Bergensk, which sounds a bit different from other Norwegian.
A Place to Visit
Bergen is full of interesting things to see. You can visit old parts of the city, like Bryggen, which is a special place listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The city has beautiful parks and places to enjoy the water. Bergen is also known for its music. Famous musicians like Edvard Grieg came from here.
Bergen is a wonderful place with a rich history, friendly people, and lots of fun things to explore!
