Boeotia
Boeotia is a beautiful area in Central Greece. It is part of the country of Greece. The capital city is Livadeia, and the biggest city is Thebes.
Where It Is
Boeotia is north of the Gulf of Corinth. It has a short coastline along the Gulf of Euboea. It borders Megaris, now West Attica, to the south. It also borders Attica to the southeast, Euboea to the northeast, Opuntian Locris, now Phthiotis, to the north, and Phocis to the west.
Famous Mountains and Lakes
The main mountains in Boeotia are Mount Parnassus in the west and Mount Helicon in the southwest. There is also Cithaeron in the south and Parnitha in the east. The longest river is the Cephissus, which runs through the center. Lake Copais was once a big lake but was drained in the 1800s. Today, Lake Yliki is a large lake near Thebes.
Ancient Stories
Boeotia has many famous stories from ancient times. Heroes like Heracles were born there. The city of Thebes is known for stories about Oedipus and the Sphinx. Famous poets like Hesiod and Pindar came from Boeotia. The region is also linked to myths about Dionysus, Semele, and Niobe.
Modern Life
Today, Boeotia is known for its food and factories. It has one of the biggest pasta factories in Europe. Companies like Nestlé and Viohalco have factories in towns like Oinofyta. The area is also rich in history, with many old ruins to explore.
