Attica
Attica is a special area in Greece. It is where the big city of Athens is located. Attica looks like a peninsula that reaches out into the Aegean Sea. It is surrounded by other places like Boeotia to the north and Megaris to the west.
Long ago, Attica was very important for Athens. During a time called the Golden Age of Athens, Attica was the main place in Ancient Greece. The area had the city of Athens, its port called Piraeus, coastal areas, and places far from the coast.
Today, Attica is a busy place. It includes not just the land around Athens but also some nearby islands like the Saronic Islands and a small part of the Peloponnese. Old mines at Lavrio were once very important for making things.
Attica was named to honor a girl named Atthis, who was the daughter of a king from Athens called Cranaus. The land has many interesting mountains and forests. One of the tallest mountains is Parnitha. There are also beautiful lakes, like Lake Marathon, which gives water to Athens.
People have lived in Attica for a very long time. Old villages and important places can still be found there. Even though many different groups ruled Attica over the years, it still keeps many of its old names and traditions. Today, Attica is a busy and lively part of Greece, full of history and beautiful places.
