Brighton and Hove

Brighton and Hove is a lovely city in East Sussex, England. It has two famous seaside towns: Brighton and Hove. The city is looked after by the Brighton and Hove City Council.

Brighton and Hove is part of a busy area in South East England with Worthing and Littlehampton. In 2014, Brighton and Hove joined with nearby places to help grow the local economy. This group is called the Greater Brighton City Region.

Unification

In 1992, people thought about joining Brighton and Hove into one group. Many people in Brighton liked this idea, and later, many in Hove liked it too. In 1997, Brighton and Hove became one city. Even though they are one city now, many people still think of them as two different places. Brighton is a popular seaside spot, while Hove is a quiet area with its own special seaside walk and town center.

Areas

The city has many districts and coastal areas. Just south of Brighton and Hove in the English Channel is the Rampion Wind Farm, which helps provide energy to the country.

Brighton has been a busy place since the 17th century. It became a town in 1854 and grew with many new homes and areas. Hove started small but grew in the 19th century. It became a town in 1889 and has its own special areas too.

There are many other places like Portslade, Aldrington, and West Blatchington, each with its own history and character. The city also has beautiful downland areas with wildflowers and butterflies.

Governance

The Brighton and Hove City Council helps take care of the city. People vote for councillors every four years. The council has different groups leading it, like the Labour Party, the Conservatives, and the Greens. The city sends representatives to the UK Parliament.

Economy and Demography

Brighton and Hove's economy is based on services, especially creative and digital work. Tourism is very important, with many hotels and famous spots like Brighton Pier. The city has about 277,100 people, with almost equal numbers of males and females.

Media

BBC Radio Sussex broadcasts from Brighton. Local TV coverage is provided by BBC South East Today and ITV News Meridian. There are many news sources in Brighton, including The Argus and Brighton and Hove News.

Freedom of the City

Some special people and groups have been given the honor of the Freedom of the City of Brighton and Hove, like athletes, military units, and organizations that helped during the COVID-19 pandemic.
