British English

British English is the way people in the United Kingdom speak and write the English language. It is used in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Many countries around the world use British English. These include places that were once former British colonies or are part of the Commonwealth. Important groups like the United Nations also use British English.

Written English in the United Kingdom is quite the same. But when people speak, their words and sounds can change a lot from place to place.

British English has some special ways of saying words. For example, in many places, the letter R is not said if it comes at the end of a word. People also sometimes add an R when it isn’t really there, especially between words.

British English is used in schools, books, and many important places. It helps people talk and write clearly to each other.
