The Commonwealth of Nations
The Commonwealth of Nations is a friendly group of 56 countries. Many of these countries used to be part of the British Empire. Today, they are connected because they all speak English and share similar histories and cultures.
People from Commonwealth countries can enjoy special benefits. For example, they often have easier ways to visit or live in places like the United Kingdom. Instead of embassies, these countries have high commissions to represent one another.
The Commonwealth has a special leader called the Head of the Commonwealth. Right now, Charles III is the Head of the Commonwealth. He is also the king of 15 member states known as the Commonwealth realms.
The Commonwealth holds a big sports event every four years called the Commonwealth Games. Athletes from all the member countries come together to compete in sports like running, swimming, and rugby. The Games help countries make friends and have fun while playing sports.
Countries in the Commonwealth also work together to help each other. They share ideas about democracy, human rights, and fair laws. This helps make life better for everyone in these countries.
The Commonwealth includes countries from every continent. India is the largest member, and Tuvalu is the smallest. Some countries joined the Commonwealth even though they were never part of the British Empire, like Mozambique and Rwanda.
The Commonwealth is a way for countries to stay connected and help one another, even though they are far apart.
