Cambridge is a lovely city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. It sits close to Greater Boston, right across the Charles River from Boston. This cozy place has a long history and many fun things to see and learn about.
A Place Full of Learning
Cambridge is very special because it is home to two big, famous schools: Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT. Harvard is the oldest college in the United States, started all the way back in 1636. MIT is also very well-known for its science and technology work. In the city, you can visit beautiful campuses, see cool buildings, and maybe even meet some students.
Squares and Neighborhoods
Cambridge is called the “City of Squares” because it has many special places called squares. These squares are like little neighborhoods with shops, restaurants, and fun things to do. Some of the most famous squares are:
- Harvard Square – This is where you’ll find Harvard University. It’s full of bookstores, shops, and street musicians.
- Kendall Square – Near MIT, this area is buzzing with new technology companies and cool science work.

A City With History
Cambridge has a rich history. People have lived along the Charles River for thousands of years. Long ago, Native American tribes lived there. Later, English settlers arrived in the 1630s and started a new town. During a difficult time when countries didn’t get along, leaders met in Cambridge Common to plan what to do next. Even famous leaders like George Washington visited Cambridge!

Cambridge is full of places to visit and things to see. You can explore museums like the Harvard Art Museum and the Harvard Museum of Natural History. There are also beautiful green spaces like Harvard Yard and Mount Auburn Cemetery where you can walk and enjoy nature. In the warmer months, you might spot street musicians playing happy tunes in Harvard Square.
Living in Cambridge
The city of Cambridge has many services to help people live comfortably. There are good roads, public transportation like buses and trains, and many places to get things delivered. Cycling and walking are very popular here, especially along the paths by the Charles River. The city also has libraries, police, and fire services to keep everyone safe.
