The Caucasus Mountains

The Caucasus Mountains are a big, beautiful group of mountains where Asia and Europe meet. They stretch from the Black Sea in the west to the Caspian Sea in the east. These mountains are home to many tall peaks and amazing views.

Tallest Mountain

One of the most famous peaks is Mount Elbrus. It is the highest mountain in Europe, standing very tall at 5,642 metres (18,510 feet). Some people even think it might be in Asia! Mount Elbrus is higher than Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in the Alps.

Two Parts of the Caucasus

The Caucasus Mountains have two main parts: the Greater Caucasus and the Lesser Caucasus. The Greater Caucasus runs from west to east, starting near the Black Sea and going close to Baku on the Caspian Sea. The Lesser Caucasus is about 100 km south of the Greater Caucasus. These two parts are connected by smaller mountain chains, making a wide and lovely landscape.

Changing Weather

The weather in the Caucasus Mountains changes a lot depending on where you are and how high up you go. The higher you climb, the colder it gets. Near the sea, like in Sokhumi and Abkhazia, it is warmer. But on the slopes of tall mountains like Kazbek, it is much colder. Some places get a lot of rain, especially in the west, while others, like Dagestan, are drier. In winter, the mountains can get a lot of snow, and sometimes it gets very deep!

Beautiful Landscapes

The Caucasus Mountains have many different kinds of places. In the lower areas, there are warm, wet forests. Higher up, you can find icy glaciers. In the south, there are dry grasslands and pretty meadows full of flowers. The north side has forests with oak, maple, and ash trees. Higher up, you see birch and pine trees. The south side has forests of beech, oak, and other trees. All of these plants make the Caucasus Mountains a wonderful place to explore.
