Who was Christian Doppler?
Christian Doppler was an Austrian mathematician and physicist. He was born in Salzburg in 1803 and passed away in Venice in 1853.
The Doppler Effect
Doppler is best known for creating an idea called the Doppler effect. This idea explains how the frequency of a wave, like sound or light, changes depending on how fast the source of the wave and the person observing it are moving toward or away from each other. His work helped scientists understand many natural phenomena and is still used today in technologies such as radar and medical imaging.
His Life
Christian Doppler was born into a family where his father wanted him to study business. He later went to school in Linz and then to the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna. In 1836, he married Mathilde Sturm, and they had five children together. In 1842, he shared his important idea about the Doppler effect. He worked as a professor in Prague and later in Selmecbánya, then part of the Kingdom of Hungary. He moved to Vienna in 1849 and became head of the Institute for Experimental Physics at the University of Vienna, where he influenced a young student named Gregor Mendel, who later became known for his work in genetics.
