Welcome to Colombo!

Colombo is the biggest city in Sri Lanka. It is a busy place where people work, live, and visit for fun. The city is right on the west coast of the island and is full of life.

Colombo is very important for business and government. Many big offices and shops are here. The city has many canals and a big lake called the Beira Lake. People love to go there for special events.

The city has a warm, tropical weather. It stays hot all year, and it rains a lot during the monsoon seasons. Colombo is a mix of old and new. You can see buildings from when the British Empire lived there, and also very tall, modern buildings.

Places to See

Colombo has many nice places to visit. Galle Face Green is a lovely spot by the ocean where people walk and relax. The Galle Face Hotel is an old, fancy building nearby.

The Gangaramaya Temple is a beautiful temple with a mix of different styles. Viharamahadevi Park is a big park with a large Buddha statue. It is next to the National Museum of Colombo and the Town Hall.

Living in Colombo

Many different kinds of people live in Colombo. The main groups are Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Tamils, and Sri Lankan Moors. There are also people from Chinese, Portuguese Burgher, Dutch Burgher, Malay, and Indian backgrounds. People follow many religions, including Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity.

Colombo has many schools and universities. Some schools have been there since the 1800s, like Royal College Colombo and Bishop's College. There are also big universities like the University of Colombo.

Fun and Culture

Colombo is full of festivals and fun events. The biggest festival is Vesak, which celebrates important events in Buddha's life. The city lights up with colorful lanterns, and people give away food and drinks.

People in Colombo love sports, especially cricket. The city has famous cricket stadiums like the Singhalese Sports Club's Cricket Stadium and R. Premadasa Stadium. There are also places for swimming, football, and even a golf club.

Colombo is a wonderful place with a rich history and many things to see and do. It is a city where old meets new, and everyone is welcome!
