What Is a Monsoon?

A monsoon is a special kind of wind that changes with the seasons. These winds flip direction and bring lots of rain to many places around the world. The word “monsoon” started in India and nearby lands, where strong winds from the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea bring rainy weather each year.

Monsoons are very important because they decide when and where rain falls. Some of the biggest monsoon systems are in West Africa, Asia, Australia, North America, and South America. During the rainy time, monsoons fill rivers, help crops grow, and give water to people and animals.

How Monsoons Work

Monsoons happen because land and oceans heat up and cool down at different speeds. In warm months, land heats up faster than the ocean. This creates low pressure over land and higher pressure over the ocean, causing breezes to blow from the ocean to the land. These breezes bring moist air that rises and cools, leading to rain over land.

In cooler months, the land cools faster than the ocean. This changes the pressure, causing air to flow from land to ocean. When moist air rises over the ocean, it cools and causes rain there instead. This cycle of changing winds and rain is what we call a monsoon.

Monsoons Around the World

Monsoons affect many parts of the world. In North America, a monsoon happens from late June to September, starting in Mexico and moving into places like Arizona, New Mexico, and California. In Asia, monsoons are very important for rain in places like India, where most of the yearly rain comes during this season. Australia also has a rainy season from September to February, which is part of its monsoon pattern.
