Dickinsonia
Dickinsonia was a very old, strange creature that lived a long time ago. It was not an animal, plant, or anything we know today. It had a round body with many parts, like segments, and could be very small or very big β from tiny to as long as a grown-up's arm!
Dickinsonia lived in shallow water in places that are now Australia, China, Russia, and Ukraine. Scientists found its fossils in sandstone, which looks like imprints left behind. These imprints tell us about its shape and how it might have moved along the sea floor.
People first found Dickinsonia in 1946 in South Australia. It was named after Ben Dickinson, a person who helped study mines there. Since then, many more fossils have been found. Scientists still wonder what Dickinsonia was β some think it might have been an early relative of animals, but they are not sure.
Dickinsonia did not have a mouth or a stomach like animals today. It might have eaten tiny bits of life on the sea bottom. Its body had a special symmetry, meaning one side looked like the other. Even though we do not know exactly what it was, Dickinsonia helps us learn about life from long, long ago.
