Welcome to Flanders
Flanders is the northern part of Belgium. People who live in Flanders speak Dutch, often called Flemish. It is a busy, friendly place with many cities and towns.
Where is Flanders?
Flanders shares borders with three countries: the Netherlands to the north, France to the west, and Germany is very close to the east. Inside Belgium, Flanders borders Wallonia, another part of the country. The sea called the North Sea is on Flanders’ northwest coast.
Big cities in Flanders include Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, and Leuven. Antwerp is the largest city and has many canals and a big port. Ghent is known for its beautiful old buildings. Bruges is a charming city with cobblestone streets and towers. Leuven is famous for its old university.
History and Culture
Flanders has a rich history. During the Middle Ages, cities like Ghent, Bruges, and Antwerp became important for trading and making fine cloth. Today, Flanders is one of the wealthiest parts of Europe.
People in Flanders enjoy many fun activities. They love sports like soccer, cycling, and tennis. One famous cycling race is the Tour of Flanders, called one of the five “Monuments” of cycling. Music festivals like Rock Werchter and Tomorrowland attract visitors from all over the world.
Life in Flanders
Children in Flanders go to school from age six. Schools focus on learning and are known for being good, especially in subjects like math and science. Flanders also has excellent healthcare looked after by its own government.
The main language is Dutch, but many people also speak French or English. Flanders is a place where old traditions meet new ideas, making it a wonderful part of Belgium to explore.
