Gaeta
Gaeta is a lovely seaside town in the province of Latina in Lazio, Italy. It sits on a pretty hill that looks out over the Gulf of Gaeta. The town is about 133 km south of Rome and 96.5 km north of Naples.
Gaeta has a long and interesting history. For many years, its strong walls helped keep it safe. Some of these walls are from ancient Roman times and were made even stronger in the 1400s. Today, Gaeta is a busy fishing port and a favorite place for people to visit the beach. It is also home to a navy base for NATO.
The town is known for its clean and beautiful beaches. In 2025, Gaeta received special awards called blue and green flags for twelve years in a row. This shows how lovely and tidy its beaches are. Gaeta is also one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
Gaeta has many places to explore. One famous spot is the Angevine-Aragonese Castle, which may have been built a very long time ago to protect the town. Inside the castle, there is a special chapel made by a king in 1849. Another interesting place is the Mausoleum of Lucius Munatius Plancus, a big round stone building from ancient times. Visitors can also see the Sanctuary of SS. Trinità and visit a beautiful sea cave called the Grotta del Turco.
People in Gaeta enjoy tasty local food. A special dish called tiella is popular. It is like a savory pizza and can be filled with squids, octopuses, tomatoes, or sausages. Gaeta is also famous for its olives and sunny beaches, such as Serapo and Fontania.
Gaeta has friendly connections with cities around the world, including Cambridge in the United States, Frontignan in France, and Mobile in the United States.
